In August 1975, the hotel found itself in the music business as well. A concert planned for the Pow Wow grounds was relocated because of muddy conditions to the outdoor area of the Harvest House. Country star Waylon Jennings headlined the event, which also featured the Chris Hillman Band and Tracy Nelson and Mother Earth. Music played well into the evening, drawing move than 2,500 fans. The Friday Afternoon Club beer garden area of the Harvest House Hotel in 1978. (Carnegie Library for Local History/Daily Camera Collection) The success of the concert and its diverse audience led hotel management to consider booking bands at the hotel on a regular basis. After a renovation, Anthony’s Gardens, named for hotel owner Tony Seibert, opened in the summer of 1977 with a regular “Friday Afternoon Club” featuring live music. It didn’t take much time before the Harvest House FAC was an overwhelming success, drawing a thousand or more young people from Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins and as far as Durango to kick-off the weekend. Boulder attorney Harold Fielden, member of The Legendary 4-Nikators band, was there almost every Friday even when his band wasn’t booked. “By Thursday, everyone was already talking about going to the Harvest House,” Fielden said in an interview. “It was impossible to make plans to do anything else during that time because everyone would be at the FAC.” With 15 outdoor drink stations, hotel personnel claimed it was the largest pouring outlet in the state, a Daily Camera story reported. Twenty bouncers were hired to check IDs. Still, things got out of hand. Business owners near the hotel were furious that their customers had no place to park on Friday afternoons. Traffic stalled on 28th Street to the point where those headed to the FAC would pull over, abandon their cars and run the rest of the way to the hotel, Fielden recalled. The city was inundated with complaints about the FAC. Perhaps the final straw was the July 28, 1980, issue of Newsweek, which published an article about an ultra-liberal and hedonistic Boulder called, “Where the Hip Meet to Trip.” The two-page story claimed that Boulder offices closed at 3 p.m. so people could go home, change clothes and make the start of the Harvest House party. Newsweek alluded to drug use as well as a hook-up culture that permeated the weekly event. The Newsweek issue sold out everywhere in town and while some chuckled at the inaccuracies and exaggerations, many were offended. The article spurred letters, complaints, and even lawsuits related to the Harvest House FAC. By 1982, the hotel was purchased by AIRCOA (Associated Inns and Restaurant Company of America) and Citibank. New management promised strict supervision of the FAC with a concerted effort to eliminate “riff-raff and freeloaders as much as possible,” a Daily Camera story stated. Noise enforcement officials began issuing tickets directly to each band. But complaints continued and neighboring merchants sued the hotel regarding the onslaught of cars every Friday. Gradually, people grew up and settled down. By the end of the 1980s, the FAC party fizzled out. In 2003, a new hotel manager revived the weekly happy hour and sponsored a contest for the most embarrassing or most romantic story from the original FAC. Entries poured in. The stack of personal memories included tales of excessive drinking, playing Frisbee and volleyball, watching band antics including the times a motorcycle roared on stage, cooling off in Boulder Creek, falling in love, dancing without underwear, and even conceiving a child at the event. One entry dubbed the FAC “Boulder’s little Woodstock.” For many Boulder boomers, the Harvest House FAC was a defining experience and a piece of shared history that will never be forgotten. At thirteen, desperate to hook up with Janis Joplin, he attended his aunt Joan Didion and uncle John Gregory Dunne’s legendary L.A. party for the publication of Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. At sixteen, he got kicked out of boarding school, ending his institutional education for good. In his early 20s, he shared an apartment in Manhattan’s Hotel Des Artistes with his best friend and soulmate Carrie Fisher, while she was filming some sci-fi movie called Star Wars and he was a struggling actor working as a popcorn concessionaire at Radio City Music Hall. A few years later, he produced and starred in the now-iconic film After Hours, directed by Martin Scorsese. In the midst of it all, Griffin’s 22-year-old sister Dominique, a rising star in Hollywood, was brutally strangled to death by her ex-boyfriend, leading to one of the most infamous public trials of the 1980s, which ended in a travesty of justice that also somehow marked the beginning of their father Dominick Dunne’s career as a bestselling author of true crime narratives. And yet, for all its bold-face cast of characters and jaw-dropping scenes, The Friday Afternoon Club is no celebrity memoir. It is, down to its bones, a family story that brilliantly embraces the poignant absurdities and best and worst efforts of its loveable, infuriating, funny, and moving characters—its author most of all—finding wicked, self-deprecating humor and glints of surprising light in even the most harrowing and painful of circumstances.
